King and Kaisers. Kaltern has one of Europe's steepest and longest cable cars, which will bring you up to the top of the Mendel mountain pass. Centuries ago this was the refreshing summer retreat of the Imperial aristocracy. Austiran Emperor Franz Josef I visited Mendel in 1894 and 1905 and Empress Elisabeth "Sissi" often vacationed in the area. Other famous people, such as German author Karl May, NObel Prize winner Wilhelm C. Röntgen and Indian peace activist Mahatma Gandhi, also came to the Mendel to enjoy the refreshing summer climate.
