750 Hectares. The first documentation of the "vinum de caldaro" is inthe year 1220 and the origins
of Kaltern's wine cultivation history surely date back to the Rhaetian and Roman times. Kaltern lies on the "Wine Road of
South Tyrol". The road begins south-west of Bozen/Bolzano and runs south for 37 km along the right side of the Etsch/Adige
River Valley until it reaches the village of Salurn, which boarders with the province of Trentino. Kaltern's wine farmers
possess approximately 760 hectares of prime cultivable land where they are able to produce excellent wines, which are then
sold at local wine shops, private wine cellars or at the larger wine cooperatives. The famous "Kalterer-See" wine is produced
from the local Vernatsch grape variety. However, there are also other classic varieties which are grown here: "Weiß" and
"Blauburgunder" (White and Red Brugundy), Chardonnay, "Gewürztraminer", Cabernet and Merlot. The South Tyrolean Wine Museum,
located in the village center, is full of objects and information about the history and importance wine has had in this area
over the centuries.
